Saab 9-5 SportCombi and the Volvo V70

20 05 2008

I guess it’s safe to say that every car enthusiast wants to own a sports wagon and what better way to do it by choosing between two of the best Swedish automakers around. These cars are the Saab 9-5 SportCombi and the Volvo V70 which have recently become the best cars in their category. The Sportcombi had been around since 1999 with minor changes year after year. On the other hand, the Volvo V70 has been just revitalized for the year 2008 attracting a lot of buyers ever since its release.

So the question is which Swede wagon is better? Right now we still don’t know although if you read long enough, you certainly will.

Saab 9-5 SportCombi 2.3 T

Price: 39,000 USD

This wagon’s peak torque reaches 1900 and for a car its size it can screech from 0-60 mph in just 7.5 seconds. Meanwhile, on the external side of things the Sportcombi looks respectable but it does not have the x-factor that will make it stand out from a crowd of other cars. It has great lines and contours but since its design surely needs an upgrade after nine years of limited tweaking. The interior of the SportCombi still doesn’t pack much of a punch although I would say that the Saab craftsmanship is still evident when you check out this car’s insides.

There is nothing wrong with the Saab although it seems way stiffer and less imaginative than German cars I know of. I still think that this car is too expensive for the standard features that it offers.

The Volvo V70

Price: 32,000 USD

The good thing about the Volvo V70 compared to the SportCombi is that it has a shorter name compared to the latter. Seriously, the car has an S80 engine that packs a whallop when it comes to power. However, its acceleration is still quite suspect considering it takes 8.5 seconds for it to reach 60 mph as opposed to the SportCombi’s 7.5. Meanwhile, the exterior of the V70 is respectable although it’s not enough to make the world shake. Overall, I still think that the design of the V70 is good enough to demand attention from other car drivers.

What’s good about the interior design of the Volvo V70 is its space that is available. A sports wagon is meant to have big space and that is what the V70 offers. Basically, this car has a great set of multimedia artillery that anyone can appreciate. If you just want to sit back and listen to great music then this car can provide just that.

Overall, the Volvo V70 is clearly the winner between the two but by only a couple of points. First it is way cheaper by seven thousand bucks and second, it has more features compared to the Saab. The drivability of the V70 is impressive and it leaves the SportCompi primitive in this department.
