Any person who is in the know of the current trends of cars knows that the Germans have been doing a pretty good job with respect to the automotive technology. Too good that it’s hard not to mention Germany alongside the Italians, Japanese, Americans, and even the French and in fact they may be just a little bit better. Basically, pitting two German cars against one another is a difficult contest to grade and more so if they’re from the assembly lines of Audi and Porsche.
The first is a derivative of the Lamborghini Gallardo chassis and that happens to be the Audi R8. The other one is a recipient of loads of superlatives over the years and that is the Porsche 911. The latter has already established itself as an excellent sports car and the former is here to challenge and take its lofty position at the top.
Audi R8
Price: 109000
The R8 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in only 4.4 seconds and that is made possible by its 4.2 liter V8 engine. When it comes to its maximum speed, this car can reach as fast as 187 mph and if you ask me, that’s an excellent number to torch the road. Although it’s far from being a supercar, it already has the base that the makers can work on to update it to that status. The exterior of the Audi R8 is made of aluminum that makes this car tough and light at the same time.
The Audi R8 has very few aesthetics but since it’s a German auto, everything is nice and comfortable when you see the cabin and when you site behind the steering wheel. Would-be owners are also treated for some fine Alcantara leather sports seats. Overall, the car has enough space to accommodate tall people. The driving experience is fantastic and there’s very little struggling even when you test the car in rough terrain. I found the R8 quite expensive although performance-wise this car would have been a flat-out stud had it been a man.
Porsche 911 Carrera 4S
Price: 89700
This car boasts of a 3.8 liter engine that enables it to zoom from 0-60 mph in merely 4.6 seconds. The Carrera is a little slower at around 179 mph compared to its Audi counterpart. However, the Carrera 4S redeems itself with its excellent handling and sleek exterior features. Speaking of the exterior, the Carrera 4S may not stand out as a Cayman would but all in all, it does not look that terrible either. The good thing is that its aesthetics is just enough so that its aerodynamics would not affect its performance.
On a different note, the interior may not be that big but the electronically-controlled seats are something that I didn’t expect and liked at the same time. The cargo space was also a bit surprising that was pegged at 7.24 square feet and that’s enough space if you want road trip just a bit. The multimedia artillery of the Carrera 4S shouldn’t be taken lightly either since it has a stereo that plays MP3-coded CDs.
Overall, this car might be slower than its Audi counterpart but then again, it’s cheaper by almost 20000 bucks! If you’re going to ask me that’s a lot of money and the car has very few faults that you can find. I certainly gave my vote to the Carrera 4S not because of its price but also the performance and intangibles that it brings to the table.
