Handling Traffic Jams without getting Irate

2 07 2008

As people become busier, our society has now become addicted to doing things faster way. Because of this, it’s inevitable seeing people and vehicles everywhere in what seems to be a perpetual rush. Because there are vehicles, traffic jams have become part of our existence whether we like it or not. Traffic jams or gridlocks happen usually during rush-hour when so many people like you are trying to catch a meeting, an interview or even an exam and there’s no question that being stuck in traffic is something no one wants to experience. However, you just can’t avoid being stuck in traffic and when that happens, there’s no need to lose your cool. Here are some tips that can help you breeze through this road mess.

Listen to Feel-Good Music

One of the best ways to remove feeling anxious, angry, and stressed while being stuck in traffic is to listen to some feel-good music such as jazz or even the classical variety. If you don’t have a CD or ipod then just turn on the radio and tune-in on your favorite station.

Sing

This sounds crazy initially but as far as I am concerned, this one works. Singing just relaxes anyone and that’s something that you need in order to forget that important meeting or interview that you’re just about to miss. You might look like a complete idiot to other drivers but laughing at yourself once in a while wouldn’t hurt right?

Eat

If you’re a food-person, eating your breakfast while stuck in rows of automobiles moving in lethargic fashion isn’t such a bad idea. Indulge yourself in some healthy snacks while listening to your favorite music. You’ll miss some important meetings but for sure you’ll feel a lot better.

Exercise your Brain

Although the best thing that you should do to remove the anxiety that you feel when you’re stuck in traffic is to relax, it’ll also help you if you can do some brainwork as well. For example, think about what you can do improve a certain project or if you have a driver then work on some crossword or Sudoku puzzles along the way.

Play a Game

I’m not saying that you should open your laptop or play a game using your phone because you’ll surely get yourself in a traffic mishap. I suggest you count the number of cars passing by or guess the vehicle’s brand or make.

Stretch your Limbs

Sometimes we’re so preoccupied with getting out of the traffic that we forget our lower extremities as we drive. It’ll only hit us when we get off the car and realize that we have a dead leg or foot.

Just Accept it

The thing with traffic jams is that you should be mentally prepared to so that your emotions won’t go haywire when you become stuck in traffic. You know that you’re going to be late and there’s nothing you can do even if you curse everyone on the road. So just sit back and think of “Plan B” especially if there’s a meeting or interview that you should be attending. Never forget to call your boss or anyone that you’ll be meeting so that they’ll be informed that you just got stuck and there’s nothing to be worried about.

Leave Early

Traffic jams usually happen because of the morning rush-hour and by now you should know what time it usually happens. To beat being stuck in traffic just don’t be a part of it by leaving early. This way, you won’t feel depleted when you reach your destination and aside from that, you’ll save yourself from a bad day.

Being stuck in traffic is probably the worst experience that everyone has to go through in their daily routines. There is no way to like this traffic phenomenon but you can lessen its impact on your day by reducing stress and anxiety.
