The modern age has given us technological advantages that are ancestors could not have imagined possible. However, the more technology available, the more distractions and work that leaves us too busy to even find time for sleep. Without a doubt, sleeping is an essential part of our routine and completely discarding it can cause someone to go insane, literally. Isn’t it amazing how so many people are struggling just to get enough sleep? The truth is, it’s hard to pinpoint one big cause of this generation’s lack of sleep, although it’s good to know that there are ways to help people who are sleep deprived. Here are some tips:
1. Wake Up Early
Although late-night TV or DVD watching is definitely tempting, hauling yourself around 5 or 6 am is one easy way to being able to sleep early at night. The truth is, you need to follow a certain sleep routine, because it sets the timing of your sleep clock. The number of hours of sleep is immaterial if you don’t sleep at the right time. That means you have to sleep at exactly the same time each day and wake at around the same time as well. Although waking up at a specific time requires discipline and lots of its, it sets your sleeping clock at the right time, which can make your days better.
2. Don’t Read or Watch Serious Stuff
I always have a hard time sleeping after reading a pretty heavy material or watching something really scary. The fact is, these things set your mind to the active mode and that means, you’ll have a more difficult time sleeping because you’re always thinking of them. Before going to bed, let your mind take on the passive mode and to do this, watch something funny or read some fiction material. Let your mind just enjoy without having to contemplate on some serious stuff. That way, sleep will come easier for you.
3. Turn Off the Lights
Remember the time when your mother tells you to turn off the lights before sleeping? When we were kids, we wanted the room to be bright because we’re scared of the dark. However, doing it into adulthood is not only impractical, it is also one way of not being able to sleep soundly. The fact is, turning the lights off kills all the stimuli that your eyes might send to your brain. Aside from that, even the smallest amount of light can affect your sleep, so better turn all of your lights before you bid your day goodbye.
4. Relax
One of the reasons why we end up not sleeping enough is we just think of a lot of things all the time, even if we’re supposed to take some rest already. When we’re at home, we should make a point to forget all the things that has something to do with work. Our home is our sanctuary and it’s the place where we rest our thoughts and body. When you want to sleep, just remove all the thoughts that bug your head and just plain and simple relax. Once you are able to do this, you easily notice that sleeping becomes way easier.
5. No Computers
Surfing the internet before sleeping might be effective for some people, but as far as I am concerned, sleeping becomes even more difficult because of it. Just like lights, computers are sources of stimuli that can arouse your mind further. Aside from that, you’ll end up surfing or watching things that can delay your sleep, leaving you tired and increasing your sleep debt.
Overall, you need your body to recharge after a hard day’s work and to that, you need to have a decent sleeping hygiene. Pulling out an all nighter is not only tough, but sleepy as well.
